Four new Special Economic Zones (KEK) proposed by business figures this year have been approved by President Joko Widodo. These four KEKs are Edutek Medika Internasional Banten at Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD), Nipa in Riau Islands, Batam International Health Tourism Zone in Riau Islands, and Bungku Green Industry in Central Sulawesi.The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs stated that President Joko Widodo has approved the four proposals to establish KEKs and is currently working on Government Regulations (PP) to determine the legal basis. Previously, the Acting Secretary of the National Council for KEK stated that Edutek Medika Internasional at BSD will be developed into a center for digital economy research and technology development, and will also be developed as an education and health hub. The proposer of this KEK is PT Surya Inter Wisesa, a subsidiary of PT Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD).
Monash University is already operating there. Additionally, an international-standard medical hospital will be built, allowing Indonesian citizens to receive high-quality treatment internationally without needing to go to Penang or Singapore—simply come to Indonesia. As for the Nipa KEK, it will focus on logistics and distribution for energy development proposed by PT Asinusa Putra Sekawan. Meanwhile, the Batam International Health Tourism KEK is initiated by PT Karunia Praja Pesona, with a committed investment of IDR 6.91 trillion and employment of 105,406 workers. Apollo Hospital India, as the main investor, is committed to creating international-standard medical services and improving medical tourism, with completion and operation targeted for 2026. PT Anugrah Tambang Industri proposed the Bungku Green Industry KEK in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, with business activities planned for production management, logistics distribution, and energy development. The total investment for the four projects amounts to IDR 161 trillion.
