The Indonesian Ceramics Industry Association welcomed the issuance of the anti-dumping regulation, calling it the beginning of a revival for the Indonesian ceramic industry, which has been in decline over the past 10 years due to dumped imports, leading to factory closures and reduced capacity utilization. Imported tiles are at least 10% cheaper than local tiles. As of 2023, imported ceramic tiles accounted for up to 23% of the domestic market share, with imported white-body tiles holding a 60% market share. The Indonesian Ceramics Industry Association hopes that the implementation of the anti-dumping regulation will increase the capacity utilization rate of Indonesian ceramic tiles from 63% to 67-68% by the end of 2024, and to 80% by 2025.
Earlier, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, through Regulation No. 30 of 2024, required SNI certification for each batch of imported contractor ceramic tiles, aiming to reduce the volume of imported tiles by increasing import difficulties.
The Indonesian Ministry of Industry stated that out of the 5,300 industrial products with national standards (SNI), only 130 require mandatory SNI certification, while other countries have mandatory certification for thousands of industrial products. On October 14, the Ministry of Industry issued mandatory SNI certification for the following 16 products:
Prestressed steel wire products, calcium carbide, valves, stoves, LPG gas stove hoses, ceramic tiles, sling sprayers, safety shoes, sodium tripolyphosphate, aluminum sulfate, zinc oxide, cement.
Judging from the trade protection policies implemented by the Indonesian government, it is expected that over the next 5 years, the new Indonesian government will continue to strengthen supervision of consumer goods and finished product imports, encouraging manufacturing to set up locally in order to protect industries and employment.
