Indonesia to step up raids on foreign workers

The Minister of Manpower has said recently that the Ministry of Manpower is prepared to conduct raids or investigations into irregularities such as foreign workers working in Indonesia on tourist visas. The inspections are being carried out in parallel with preparations related to the status and capacity of labor inspectors in the province. The inspection was carried out by the Deputy Minister of Manpower, who had previously been effective in dealing with cases of detention of workers' diplomas in the workplace. He also mentioned that the regulations related to foreign worker permits are already being tightened. The Yogyakarta City Government has tightened the regulation of foreign workers to prevent them from abusing their tourist visas to work illegally. The Deputy Mayor pointed out that the large number of foreign tourists visiting Yogyakarta is prone to visa abuse. He asked the relevant authorities to actively check to ensure that the recruitment process of foreign workers is legal and compliant, and cited examples of foreign tourists who have activities outside of their visas in Yogyakarta's tourist areas. He argued that the government should act jointly to stop the spread of such phenomena, but also recognized that the presence of foreign workers is justified under certain conditions, such as in certain industries that require international expertise.
