French mining company Eramet's 2025 production target is 42 million tons (originally planned 32 million tons + additional 10 million tons quota), of which 30 million tons of high-grade nickel (saprolite), with 27 million tons supplying local NPI smelters and 3 million tons supplying Eramet's own smelter; 12 million tons of low-grade nickel (limonite), all supplied to the High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) project.
The project partners include French Eramet, China's Tsingshan Holding, and Indonesia's Antam, with the base located in Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP), North Maluku Province. Reserve life is 22 years (based on current capacity). The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has specially approved an additional 10 million tons mining quota (limonite dedicated for HPAL), and the government promotes high value-added processing (HPAL produces battery-grade nickel sulfate).
The short-term capacity target is to reach 42 million tons by 2025, and may increase to 60 million tons per year by 2027-2028 (subject to government approval). The HPAL project converts limonite into electric vehicle battery materials; Eramet controls 12% of global nickel resources (IWIP accounts for 40% of its total reserves), Tsingshan provides smelting technology, and Antam ensures localized operations.
