PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP), a subsidiary of Indonesia's state electricity company PLN, together with Indo ACWA Tenaga Saguling, jointly announced the official launch of the 60 MW AC floating solar power plant construction project at the Saguling Reservoir in West Java Province. The project is expected to generate over 130 GWh of electricity annually, meeting the power needs of approximately 50,000 households, while reducing carbon emissions by about 104,000 tons of CO2 per year.
The President Director of PLN IP stated that the project is one of the "National Strategic Projects" stipulated by Presidential Regulation and an important step for Indonesia towards its 2060 net-zero emission target. The project adopts internationally standard environmental and social management systems, and the use of floating solar technology not only reduces water surface evaporation but also improves photovoltaic panel efficiency due to the lower ambient temperature. The Saguling Reservoir was chosen for its stable water conditions and vast area, with the construction footprint occupying less than 5% of the reservoir's total surface area, thus not affecting the reservoir's primary functions of hydropower generation and irrigation.
This floating power plant can serve as a regional backup power source in case of emergency power outages, enhancing grid stability in western West Java and surrounding areas, providing significant local energy resilience value. The project implementation also emphasizes collaboration with local communities to promote energy transition and sustainable development.
