The President of the University of Indonesia (UI) recently announced a strategic partnership with China's Huayou Group and Tsinghua University to build a world-class metallurgical research center on campus, forming a "golden triangle" cooperation model. The collaboration will create advanced industrial laboratories and teaching factories, fully funded by Huayou Group.
The cooperation includes seven strategic projects: scholarship programs, priority recruitment of UI graduates, joint research, ESG sustainable development, and tripartite cooperation mechanisms. Huayou Group, as a global giant in the nickel-cobalt industry, has invested US$11 billion in Indonesia over the past five years, creating 20,000 jobs, and will add US$20 billion in future investment.
This partnership makes UI an applied research and development center, directly connecting with cutting-edge industrial technology, promoting the development of Indonesia's battery industry chain. The President emphasized that UI should not just be a bystander in industrialization but become a knowledge producer, ensuring Indonesia becomes an exporter of metallurgical innovation rather than just a market. This project marks the first time an Indonesian university hosts a large-scale strategic industrial research facility on campus, signifying the university's transformation from an academic institution to a technology innovation center, helping UI achieve its goal of ranking among the world's top 100 universities.
