State Electricity Company (PLN), as a shareholder of Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), supports IBC's cooperation with strategic partners to accelerate the upstream and downstream integration of Indonesia's battery industry. IBC, Antam, and the HYD investment consortium signed a framework agreement in Jakarta, marking an important milestone for this collaboration.
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources stated that the agreement is a significant milestone in implementing President Prabowo's downstream processing policy. The project has a total investment of US$6 billion, planned battery capacity of 20 GWh, and is expected to create 10,000 jobs.
He emphasized the need to prioritize national interests, give priority to local enterprises and labor for core processes, and only bring in external resources when local capabilities are insufficient. The project will be located in West Java and East Halmahera, North Maluku, covering the entire chain of batteries, cathode materials, nickel mining, smelting, and deep processing.
This project not only serves the electric vehicle industry but will also provide battery support for green power generation facilities such as Indonesia's 100 GW solar power project, catering to both vehicle batteries and photovoltaic energy storage needs.
IBC's president stated that this signing is a strategic start for the integrated localization of Indonesia's battery industry. The cooperation focuses on investment, technology mastery, and local industrial capacity building, and will drive technology and knowledge transfer, supporting Indonesia's energy transition. The parties will conduct a joint feasibility study, aiming to complete relevant work within the year, and will adhere to good governance principles and national strategic interests throughout.
