Shenzhen-headquartered CIMC Group recently announced that its subsidiary, CIMC Enric, has signed a joint venture cooperation agreement and a coke oven gas supply agreement with Tsingshan Holding Group and Nanjing Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., respectively, to jointly develop a project in Indonesia for producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) and co-producing methanol from coke oven gas. The project will be located in the Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), also known as the Tsingshan Project, led by CIMC Enric, with an annual design capacity of 180,000 tons of blue LNG and 100,000 tons of blue methanol. This is CIMC Group's first integrated steel-coking project in Indonesia and its fifth such project globally. Indonesia's natural gas reserves rank third in the Asia-Pacific region, with annual production among the top ten worldwide. However, due to geographical constraints such as numerous islands and uneven distribution of energy infrastructure, industries like mining, smelting, and processing manufacturing still struggle to obtain stable, economical, and low-carbon energy supplies, hindering sustainable industrial development. After more than a decade of construction, the Morowali Industrial Park has formed the world's first integrated stainless steel industrial cluster from mining to cold rolling, complemented by large-scale traditional carbon steel projects, new energy battery materials, and a coking industrial zone. Once the Tsingshan Project is operational, CIMC Enric and its partners will ensure a stable supply of feedstock gas, with the goal of full domestic absorption of the products, creating a closed-loop model from resources to applications. The downstream of the project will expand into application scenarios such as "LNG + photovoltaic storage" mine microgrids, island distributed LNG power generation, and LNG heavy truck logistics, forming a "island closed-loop" clean energy model tailored to Indonesia. Additionally, Indonesia currently relies on methanol imports. The methanol produced by this project can meet the growing demand of Indonesia's biodiesel and other chemical industries, providing new local feedstock support for related domestic industries.
