Hyundai Motor Group and Zhejiang Huayou Recycling Technology Co., Ltd. have officially signed a cooperation agreement to jointly build a complete electric vehicle power battery recycling system in Indonesia. The scope of cooperation covers the recycling, processing, and reuse of battery production waste and retired power batteries, aiming to achieve a full lifecycle resource loop for power batteries from production, use to recycling and regeneration. According to the cooperation agreement, HLI Green Power, a battery company jointly established by Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution in Indonesia, will stably supply various types of battery waste generated during its production process to Huayou Recycling's local recycling facility. After professional crushing treatment, this waste can be refined into the key intermediate product for battery recycling, "black mass", from which lithium, cobalt, nickel and other core power battery raw materials can be further separated and extracted, and then reused in the production of new batteries, forming a resource recycling loop.
HLI Green Power operates a power battery factory in Karawang, West Java with a total investment of USD 1.1 billion. The factory commenced formal production in 2024, primarily supplying battery cells for electric vehicle models sold by Hyundai Motor Group in Southeast Asia, India and other markets. This cooperation will initially include waste generated during the production process of this factory into the recycling system, and will gradually expand the business scope to the recycling and resource treatment of retired batteries from electric vehicles in the end market.
Huayou Recycling, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Huayou Cobalt focused on power battery recycling, possesses full-process technology and processing capabilities from waste battery disassembly, black mass preparation, to key metal hydrometallurgy and material regeneration. The two parties have agreed to deepen technical collaboration in downstream key process stages such as black mass refining and recycled raw material synthesis, to further improve material recovery rates and recycling efficiency, and reduce industry chain resource consumption.
Hyundai Motor Group stated that this cooperation is an important step in building a battery full-lifecycle circular economy system, and will continue to improve the sustainable power battery supply chain layout. As of now, the two parties have not disclosed specific quantitative indicators such as specific investment amounts, project implementation timelines, local recycling capacity plans in Indonesia, or the initial volume of waste to be recycled.
