China and Indonesia held their first Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue (CSD) in Jakarta, comprehensively upgrading bilateral cooperation frameworks. Following the high-level dialogue, both sides reached a clear consensus to push beyond the current bilateral trade volume of US$167 billion, deeply tap into the two countries' unrealized economic potential, and drive higher-quality, mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation. After talks between the Indonesian and Chinese foreign ministers, it was stated that the US$167 billion trade volume does not fully cover the two countries' cooperative potential, and both sides will continue to strengthen trade collaboration and steadily increase total bilateral trade. At the same time, the two countries will focus on revitalizing traditional strategic cooperation sectors such as energy, minerals, and maritime trade, consolidate the foundation of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, and reinforce the economic pillar of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
This dialogue finalized multiple medium- and long-term cooperation plans. Both sides initially consulted on formulating a cooperation action plan for 2027–2031, mapping out a clear roadmap for bilateral cooperation over the next five years. At the same time, new cooperation tracks were opened in areas such as artificial intelligence, high-end technology, and quarantine standards, building a diversified and modernized cooperation landscape. At the technical implementation level, the two countries will jointly develop communication satellites, expand local currency settlement cooperation, deepen financial connectivity, and reduce trade settlement costs and exchange rate risks. Regarding flagship cooperation projects, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the smooth implementation of key Belt and Road Initiative projects, optimizing the operational efficiency of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, and enhancing passenger capacity so that the flagship infrastructure project continues to deliver benefits for people's livelihoods and the economy.
Aligned with the current Indonesian government's development plans, the two countries will focus on three core areas: food security, critical minerals, and strategic infrastructure, to strengthen Indonesia's industrial resilience and improve regional industrial and supply chain arrangements. This dialogue also addressed diverse fields beyond trade and economy, reaching consensus on defense, diplomacy, maritime cooperation, and talent cultivation. Both sides will deepen cooperation on maritime navigation safety, marine scientific research, and security capacity building, and expand scholarships for Indonesian students to pursue STEM degrees abroad. Additionally, Indonesia publicly expressed full support for China's hosting of the APEC meeting in Shenzhen in 2026. This Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue, complementing the subsequent "2+2" foreign and defense ministerial dialogue mechanism, will comprehensively advance China-Indonesia cooperation to deeper levels and broader fields.
