The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) acknowledged that the import value of garments under HS codes 61 and 62 increased by 55.46% and 29.61% month-on-month (mtm).By country of origin, HS 61 goods, consisting of knitted garments and accessories, come from China, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Italy. Meanwhile, HS 62 goods, comprising non-knitted garments and accessories, come mostly from China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Morocco. In fact, imports of ready-made garments have increased, particularly HS 61 knitted garments and accessories and HS 62 non-knitted garments and accessories. On a monthly basis, HS 61 grew by 55.46% and HS 62 by 29.61%. However, on a cumulative basis, imports of finished garments, especially from China, have recorded a decline. For example, imports of HS 62 goods decreased by 1.71% in the January to July 2024 period, with the highest decline in the non-cotton garment category or HS code 6212099.
Meanwhile, imports of HS 61 goods fell even more sharply, by 4.75%. The largest reduction was in knitted garments and accessories. However, it should be noted that during the entire January-July 2024 period, imports of HS 61 knitted garments from China cumulatively fell by 4.75%, with the biggest drop in knitted garments or accessories, while HS 62 also fell by 1.71%. Similar to garments, the value of footwear imports from China under HS code 64 as of July 2024 grew by 3.37% month-on-month (m) and 21.54% year-on-year, reaching USD 50.99 million. Both garments and footwear increased monthly. However, to assess the import-export performance of goods, it is better to look at cumulative figures over a certain period. Monthly figures may be affected by delivery time processes, and inventory demand may vary each month, but cumulative or aggregated numbers provide a clearer picture of a country's import-export performance.
