President Prabowo plans to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for an integrated electric vehicle battery project in East Halmahera, North Maluku Province, on June 29. The project is backed by investment from China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), with a total investment of approximately US$6 billion. The facility will integrate multiple stages including mining operations, smelters, High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) processing, and precursor and cathode production. The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources has called it the first project of its scale globally. Through an integrated system, the production cost of electric vehicle batteries in Indonesia is expected to be significantly reduced. This project is one of 18 downstream industrial projects that Indonesia is about to develop, with a total value of nearly US$45 billion. Other projects involve nickel, bauxite, oil refining, energy storage, coal gasification (DME), as well as fisheries, agriculture, and forestry sectors.
