China's imports of Indonesian coal fall sharply

In June 2025, China's coal imports from Indonesia amounted to 11.62 million tons, a sharp year-on-year decline of 301 TP3T, a drop that exceeded the average decline in China's total coal imports (261 TP3T.) In the first half of 2025, China's cumulative coal imports from Indonesia amounted to 90.98 million tons, a year-on-year decline of 121 TP3T.In June 2025, China's total coal imports were 33.04 million tons, down 261 TP3T year-on-year, the lowest monthly volume in more than two years; total imports in the first half of the year were 221.7 million tons, down 111 TP3T year-on-year.The reasons for the decline include Chinese buyers shifting from low-calorie to high-calorie coals, and Indonesian coals not being as price-competitive as higher-quality coals (the global decline in coal prices has made the cost advantage of high-calorie coal's cost advantage); and higher domestic coal production reduced overall demand for imported coal, indirectly affecting Indonesian coal imports.
