Indonesia establishes North Java Coastal Authority

President Prabowo signed a presidential decree establishing the North Java Coastal Authority (Badan Otorita Pantura), which focuses on two main tasks: leading the construction of a giant seawall project; and attracting investment to the North Coast region. The Chairman is Didit Herdiawan Ashaf, Deputy Minister of Marine Fisheries, the Vice-Chairmen are Darwin Trisna Djajawinata, Suhajar Diantoro, and the Steering Committee includes Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development.
The North Java coastline is under severe threat of erosion and flooding, and the average annual subsidence rate in North Jakarta is as high as 25 centimeters. The new organization aims to break the bottleneck of the giant seawall project, which has been stalled due to financial and technical problems. The Presidential Decree explicitly grants the Authority the authority to approve the project and acquire land, and it is currently negotiating technical cooperation with the Dutch Delta Engineering team, with plans to start construction of the first demonstration section (Semarang-Tempeh coastline) in 2026.
