Indonesia's West Kalimantan finds 24,000 tons of uranium reserves

印尼西加里曼丹发现2.4万吨铀矿储量

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MoEMR) disclosed the discovery of 24,112 tons of uranium and thorium ore reserves in Merawi district, West Kalimantan province, which will be a key raw material for future nuclear power plants (PLTN).The region has been prioritized for nuclear energy development under the National Power Plan 2025-2034 (RUPTL).

The development plan for the Sumatra and Kalimantan systems will be the first to pilot initial construction, with 28 survey sites across the country supporting 70GW of installed nuclear power plant capacity. The project strictly follows International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) norms, including fuel supply, radioactive waste disposal, etc.

The National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN/BRIN) has completed a comprehensive geological, seismic and other assessment, pending final approval of the feasibility study by the Government.Indonesia does not currently operate any nuclear power plants, and the program will promote diversification of the energy mix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The project still faces questions about public acceptance and environmental safety, and the government has emphasized that it will ensure that all aspects meet international safety standards.
