Indonesia to become world's largest geothermal energy producer in 5 years
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has announced that it aims to overtake the United States as the world's number one country in geothermal energy utilization within five years.
Indonesia currently has the second largest installed geothermal power capacity in the world at 2.71 gigawatts (GW), while the U.S. ranks first with 3.6 GW of installed capacity.The short-term goal is to add 1 GW of installed capacity in five years, with a total capacity of 3.71 GW to achieve the reverse.; total installed capacity upgraded to 5.2 GW within 10 years in the long term (based on the Electricity Supply Master Plan 2025-2034).
The country is set to become a global center of learning for geothermal technology, said the Director General of Renewable Energy. Two projects have already been granted development permits within seven days, demonstrating the effectiveness of improved efficiency in approvals.
