Indonesia confiscates 148 hectares of land from Weda Bay nickel mine

The Energy and Mineral Resources Department (ESDM) has confiscated PT Weda Bay Nickel's (WBN) 148.25-hectare mining site on Hamahira Island in North Maluku province.The mine holds a mining license but has not obtained aForest borrowing licenses(IPPKH); and also confiscated 172.82 hectares of PT Tonia Mitra Sejahtera's nickel mining area (2.931 TP3T of its total mining area).

The company's shareholding structure is China's Qingshan Holdings (51.3%), France's Eramet (37.8%), and Indonesia's state-owned Antam (10%) WBN holds 45,065 hectares of mining rights, with confiscated land accounting for just 0.33%.

The Director of the ESDM Enforcement Bureau said that the operation is a follow-up to the Secretary of Energy's report on theCombating illegal miningThe instructions.Mining permits are valid until February 27, 2048 for WBN and until August 3, 2033 for PT TMS.

This action highlightsThe Government of Indonesia is determined to strengthen compliance management of mineral resources, especially in the area of strategic resources such as nickel.
