Indonesian President Prabowo recently visited the Bangka Belitung Islands to inspect a refinery and symbolically hand over six smelters seized by the Attorney General's Office to PT Timah. These smelters are valued at approximately IDR 7 trillion and were previously operated by illegal private companies involved in illegal mining.
During his inspection at the PT Tinindo Internusa smelter in Pangkalpinang, the capital of the Bangka Belitung Islands, Prabowo was accompanied by several senior officials including the Attorney General, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry. At the handover ceremony, Prabowo stated that these smelters were facilities operating illegally within PT Timah's mining area, and those responsible have been punished, with assets seized by the authorities. In addition to the smelters themselves, the seized assets also include rare earth minerals and tin ingots.
Prabowo pointed out that among these rare earth minerals, monazite can be worth up to USD 200,000 per ton. He also mentioned that the six companies involved had caused state losses of up to IDR 300 trillion, emphasizing that the government has stopped this loss. This handover marks a strong government response to illegal mining and mismanagement of resources, aiming to restore transparency and legality in national resource management, while strengthening control over strategic resources such as tin and rare earth elements.
