China Mobile plans to upgrade Indonesia's undersea fiber optic cable

PT Indonesia China Mobile (PT Indonesia China Mobile) will upgrade the submarine fiber optic cable (SKKL) connecting Singapore and Jakarta to enhance the capacity of Internet services in Indonesia.The company has commissioned a trans-Asian submarine cable from Singapore to Japan in June 2025, with capacity expansion of Indonesia's existing Singapore-Jakarta segment planned for 2026 (exact timing and size not disclosed).

Parent company China Mobile has 3Q2025 revenues of ~RMB794.7bn (+0.4% YoY), net profit of 31.1bn (+1.4% YoY), and ~1bn mobile subscribers globally (622m 5G subscribers, 329m broadband subscribers). The Indonesian subsidiary has been studying the construction of data centers since 2013, and is currently working with local service providers, the nearest large data center is in Singapore (10 MW), and the building of the Indonesian data center is to reduce the latency of IoT devices.

Its Indonesia business is divided into three pillars: enterprise business covering IoT, data centers, AI, software-defined technologies, etc.; carrier business similar to Huawei, which provides infrastructure such as fiber optic equipment; and mobile business focusing on roaming packages, which are sold through airports, e-commerce, and Hajj travel partnerships. 2026 will be used for the Hajj season to expand roaming market share.

The company plans to penetrate smart solutions (covering health, manufacturing, automotive, mining, supply chain, government, etc.) into Indonesia's daily life. Relying on more than 10 years of experience and 20,000 use cases, the company will join forces with local partners to rapidly roll out the technology in support of the government's plans for food, agriculture, and fisheries, emphasizing that the technology is a complete ecosystem that includes the network, big data, and command centers, not just the Internet of Things (IoT). It will also collaborate with associations such as APJII and enterprises, governments, and regulators to promote the technology and create a common economic force.
