Indonesia's Danantara recently announced the selection of partners to build waste-to-energy (WtE/PSEL) facilities in Bekasi and Denpasar. In accordance with presidential regulations, this decision is part of Danantara's WtE/PSEL program, aimed at addressing urban waste issues, optimizing waste management, reducing reliance on landfills, and promoting sustainable energy development. Danantara selected two Chinese companies as operators: Wangneng Environment Co., Ltd. for the Bekasi plant, and Zhejiang Weiming Environment Protection Co., Ltd. for the Denpasar plant. In line with Danantara's dual mission, selected operators must form consortia, promote technology transfer, and cooperate with local government-owned enterprises and local companies. Danantara also emphasized establishing strong governance mechanisms from the initial stage, including transparent, risk-mitigation-based selection processes. Danantara's Chief Investment Officer stated in a written statement that this announcement marks an important step in ensuring waste-to-energy facilities operate at the highest standards of operation, safety, and accountability. They will continue to work closely with partners, local governments, and all stakeholders to achieve measurable progress in waste reduction and clean energy development. He hopes that selected operators will maintain stable operational performance, ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, and continuously promote community engagement and participation.
