Indonesia Plans to Reduce Nickel Production This Year

The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources acknowledged that the government is considering a review of the Work Plan and Budget (RKAB) in the nickel industry to strike a balance between industrial demand and the sustainable development of local entrepreneurs. The policy aims to align the RKAB more closely with actual industry needs while giving local businesses opportunities to sell their products, preventing local entrepreneurs from facing difficulties in marketing their goods. Currently, no production cuts have been implemented, but the government will balance corporate RKAB requests with existing industry capacity and pay attention to local entrepreneurs. Additionally, the Director General of Minerals and Coal emphasized that a comprehensive evaluation of RKABs for mining companies, particularly nickel companies, for 2024–2026 will be conducted to avoid overly aggressive nickel production. If companies fail to comply with mine reclamation guarantees, production may be reduced. In 2024, nickel ore production is approximately 215 million tons per year, and production may be lowered in 2025 in response to continuously falling prices.

Indonesia's Mineral Downstreaming Drives Economic Development

Indonesia continues to optimize its natural resource potential through the mineral industry downstreaming program. As of 2024, the program has had a significant impact on building a value-added economy, focusing on commodities such as copper, bauxite, and silica sand. The mineral downstreaming was initially achieved by constructing copper and bauxite smelters and developing silica sand raw material products. Mineral downstreaming has enabled Indonesia to no longer just export raw materials, but to start producing high-value-added products domestically, such as copper cathodes, alumina, silica sand-based products, etc., becoming an important way to achieve national economic independence.
