Indonesian Steel Exports to U.S. and Canadian Markets

Indonesia's PT AM/NS recently exported 10,000 tons of galvanized steel to the United States in a ceremony held at Tanjung Priok Port, the highest export volume in nearly 20 years, valued at $10 million.Ministry of Industry officials said that the positive trend in the growth of the steel industry and the increase in exports, especially into competitive markets such as the United States, proves that the quality of Indonesian steel is internationally recognized and globally competitive. Indonesia's steel industry faces global competition, mainly from countries such as China, Vietnam, Japan and South Korea. At the same time, non-standard steel imports are under-regulated, which affects the industry's development. In order to enhance the competitiveness of the industry, the government has formulated several strategic policies, including the implementation of key tracking measures, the introduction of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) to ensure the quality of domestic steel products, and the provision of financial incentives, such as tax exemptions, tax holidays, and simplification of raw material imports through a master list, which are continually being evaluated to improve their effectiveness. The company's main markets are currently the US and Canada and it aims to export 5,000-6,000 tons per month to the US and 3,000-4,000 tons per quarter to Canada. The company also plans to explore new markets such as Europe, Malaysia and Australia.
