Prabowo plans to abolish labor outsourcing

President Prabowo will order the newly formed National Labor Welfare Commission, which is slated to be made up of leaders of the country's labor unions, to study ways to eliminate the labor outsourcing system. In his Labor Day speech in Central Jakarta, he made it clear that he wants the outsourcing system to be abolished as soon as possible. He reminded laborers to be realistic and emphasized the need for Indonesia to take into account the interests of investors. He pointed out that if investors do not invest, factories will not be able to operate and laborers will lose their jobs. At the same time, he supported a proposal by union leaders for workers to meet with employers at the Bogor Palace, saying that a meeting would be arranged between 150 union leaders and 150 business leaders, and cautioned business owners not to look out for their own interests, but to make life better for their workers. He said the government under his leadership has invested more than 500 trillion rupiah in funds for the poor to provide medical services, education, electricity subsidies and direct cash assistance. But he also emphasized the need to ensure that aid and subsidies are actually distributed to those in need. Only three unions, the Indonesian Workers' Union (KSPI), the Indonesian Welfare Workers' Union (KSBSI) and the All Indonesian Workers' Union (KSPSI), joined the president in the celebrations on May Day. Instead, other trade unions and civil society organizations held demonstrations in front of the People's Congress building.
