Indonesia aggressively developing floating solar power projects

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said the government is making a big push to develop solar-based renewable energy, with plans to expand from large-scale rooftop solar projects to floating solar projects.The Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said a strategic plan has been developed and foreign investors are invited to participate in floating solar project development. Indonesia's many dams provide potential sites for floating solar projects, with the goal of adding 14GW of installed floating solar power capacity as a way to boost the domestic solar industry. The floating solar project already operating in Indonesia is the Chirata Floating Solar Power Station in West Java, which has been in operation since November 2023, with an installed capacity of 192 megawatts peak (MWp), providing clean energy for about 50,000 households and reducing carbon emissions by 214,000 tons per year. Indonesia's state power company, in partnership with UAE-based New Energy Enterprises, on April 8, 2025, at theAbu Dhabi, capital of United Arab Emirates (UAE)An agreement was signed to plan the expansion of the Chirata Floating Solar Power Station and to explore the development of other floating solar projects in Indonesia, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the two parties covering the exploration of the potential for project development of the Jatiged Reservoir in Sumedang Regency, West Java.
