In September 2025, Chilean steel company Elecmetal and China's Longteng Group, through their joint venture PT Elecmetal Longteng Indonesia, invested USD 70 million to build a mining steel ball production base in Batang, Central Java Province. This project is the first major investment following the signing of the Indonesia-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
Of the total investment, USD 40 million is allocated for fixed assets and USD 30 million for working capital; Elecmetal (Chile) and Longteng (China) each hold a 50% stake; the plant plans to produce high-quality grinding balls for the global mining market. The Chilean Ambassador to Indonesia noted that this project demonstrates the complementary advantages of both countries' resources. Chile holds the world's largest lithium reserves, while Indonesia is a major nickel producer, and the cooperation will strengthen both parties' positions in the electric vehicle supply chain.
The President of Chile plans to visit Indonesia in 2025 to further deepen bilateral cooperation. This project is expected to enhance Indonesia's metallurgical industry technology level and create job opportunities.
