The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources recently suspended 190 mining companies (including 39 nickel companies) for failing to fulfill reclamation guarantee obligations (violating Government Regulation No. 78 of 2010).
Indonesian Nickel Mining Association (APNI) Secretary General recently issued a statement supporting the government's efforts to regulate the industry order and ensure fair competition for compliant companies. He also urged member companies to make up the guarantee within the deadline and submit reclamation plans, integrating reclamation compliance into ESG national standards (environmental pillar).
ESG standard framework includes:Environment (E) reclamation progress, tailings management, water resource recycling rate; Social (S) community consultation mechanism, occupational safety indicators; and Governance (G) anti-bribery certification, supply chain due diligence.
The implementation path for the relevant framework is Q4 2025 making reclamation a mandatory ESG indicator, conducting pilot audits of 5-10 mining areas in 2026, and promoting low-carbon nickel supply chain certification by 2027.
