Indonesia to launch tender for waste-to-energy project to start operations by 2028

Investment manager Danantara plans to launch a public tender in November 2025 for a waste-to-energy (WtE) project aimed at converting municipal waste into electricity through incineration technology (incineration).The program will cover 10 cities in the first batch and will be expanded to 23 cities in the following years, and is expected to be commercially operational in 2028.

The government plans to useDirect incineration technology(Temp.850-1000 degrees), which can handle all types of garbage and reduce the capacity by up to90%. Future plans to phase out the originalGasification technology (gasifier)As the latter has high waste moisture requirements and generates only 4%-44%, it will also be equipped with aElectrostatic precipitator, lime powderincreaseand other exhaust gas treatment systems.

Each local government is required to provide daily1000-2000 tonsGarbage to SurabayaBenowo Power StationFor example, the new power station will have a capacity of2131 tons/dayPower generation40.79 MWThe project is the first of its kind in Indonesia. The project is part of Indonesia's efforts to realizeWaste reduction and renewable energy developmentof important initiatives to be implemented upon completion of the revision of Presidential Regulation No. 35 of 2018.
