Singapore's Equator Renewables Asia (ERA) and CRE International (CREI), a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), have signed a framework agreement for the joint development of a 900 MW solar power and 1.2 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in the Riau Islands, Indonesia.Of this, 400 megawatts of AC power will be delivered to Singapore via submarine cables.
CREI is responsible for investment, construction and operation on the generation side, while ERA is responsible for transmission and procurement coordination. The project, which is expected to be completed by 2029, is one of six licensees approved by Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) to import clean electricity. Singapore plans to import about 6 GW of low-carbon electricity by 2035 to meet one-third of the country's energy needs in order to achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2050.
In June this year, Singapore and Indonesia agreed to develop a solar panel industry in the Riau Islands as part of a cross-border clean energy trade program. The IEA report noted that grid-connected solar and wind power and submarine high-voltage direct-current cable interconnections in Southeast Asia are critical to meeting regional electricity demand.
