The Indonesian government is formulating new regulations on online store management fees (service charges) for e-commerce platforms, with the core aim of enhancing the competitiveness of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the digital sector. One of the options currently under study is to grant certified MSMEs that only sell local products a reduction of at least 50% in platform service fees or management fees, with this reduction applicable to every transaction of local products. In addition, the fee reduction must be applied for through the MSME Service System (SAPA UMKM), and enterprises need to submit applications through this system for certification. Specific details will be further stipulated by ministerial decree. In response to this proposed policy, a digital economy observer commented, emphasizing that the current discussion on platform management fees is still in the planning stage, and the government must clarify policy details to the public as soon as possible to prevent the spread of misinformation and ensure the digital ecosystem has clear expectations regarding policy direction. He also reminded that the policy formulation process should not be rushed, and must first engage in sufficient dialogue with business operators and academia to ensure the policy can have a positive economic impact. Policies introduced hastily without adequate research may lack effectiveness or even negatively affect the economy, ultimately harming the government's own interests. The government's new regulation aims to reduce the burden on local MSMEs through fee reductions, helping them better integrate into the digital economy and enhance market competitiveness. However, the specific implementation timeline and detailed terms of the policy still await official announcement.
