Background
In the 21st century, with the full-scale democratic reform in Indonesia in 2000, the social environment has become increasingly open and inclusive, creating favorable conditions for the organization and development of the Chinese community. Under this historical opportunity, various types of Chinese associations have sprung up one after another, showing vigorous vitality. It is in this context that the Indonesian Teochew Villagers' Association was born.
On August 30, 2000, Huang Jijun, Yang Jinfeng, Xie Jia Ti three respected Teochew townspeople, jointly invited a number of enthusiastic folks in Jakarta Daban restaurant to get together, the official initiative to prepare for the establishment of the "Indonesian Teochew Townspeople's Association". The initiative was unanimously endorsed by the villagers attending the meeting, and it was generally agreed that the time was ripe and imperative. In the following month, after in-depth discussions, it was finally determined that 21 enthusiastic fellow villagers would serve as the initiators of the Association.
formal process
On September 27, 2000, the Provisional Preparatory Committee for the Indonesian Teochew Villagers' Association was formally established, and three villagers, Zeng Guokui, Xie Jia Ti and Zhang Bao Xian, were elected to be the directors of the Preparatory Committee, who were in charge of the core affairs of the Association's establishment. During the preparatory period, all parties worked together and efficiently pushed forward the preparatory work, and on January 19, 2001, the Indonesian Teochew Villagers' Association was formally established. The first council elected Mr. Huang Jijun as the chairman, Mr. Yang Jinfeng as the supervisor and Mr. Huang Bingxiang as the secretary-general, which marked a new stage of the organizational and institutional development of the Teochew community in Indonesia.
Purpose and Core Mission
Since its inception, the Association has established a clear purpose: to unite Teochew villagers at home and abroad, to promote friendship; to inherit and promote the excellent traditional culture of Chaoshan; to expand the network of exchanges between the Teochew people in Indonesia, to strengthen communication and collaboration, and to promote common development. This purpose has not only consolidated the emotional identity of the majority of overseas Teochew compatriots, but also laid a solid foundation for the subsequent development of various tasks.
Development Achievements and Social Contributions
In 2002, the Association successfully completed the election of the second council, Mr. Tsang Kwok Kui was elected as the new chairman, and Mr. Lien Kai Ho was appointed as the chairman of the board of supervisors. Under his leadership, the Association has been actively involved in Chinese language education. Through investment in schools, subsidizing teaching materials, and organizing cultural activities, the Association has effectively made up for the faults in Chinese language education caused by historical reasons, and has vigorously promoted the transmission of Chinese language and culture from one generation to the next.
After sixteen years of wind and rain, under the joint efforts of the successive councils, the Indonesian Teochew Villagers Association has continued to expand its service areas: on the one hand, it actively promotes the sharing of industrial and commercial information and the docking of resources among its members, which helps the development of their careers; on the other hand, it participates in a wide range of social public welfare and community building, and fulfills its social responsibility. Nowadays, the Association has grown into one of the most influential Chinese associations in Indonesia, and continues to make positive contributions to the promotion of ethnic harmony, cultural heritage and economic and social development.
