China actively invests in developing downstream coconut industry in Indonesia

Indonesia has a large potential in the coconut industry, its coconut and related processed products are exported to a number of countries, and China has a significant investment in Indonesia's coconut industry.Of the total coconut plantation area in Indonesia in 2025, private plantations accounted for the largest share of 3,274,321 hectares, state-run large-scale plantations were 443 hectares, and private large-scale plantations were 36,591 hectares. Compared to 2024, the area of private plantations and state-run large-scale plantations increased, while the area of private large-scale plantations decreased from 42,146 ha. 2025 private plantations are projected to produce about 282,927 tons of coconuts, up from 2,791,147 tons in 2024; state-run large-scale plantations are projected to produce 565 tons; and private large-scale plantations are projected to produce 34,345 tons. 2025 Private plantation productivity is projected to reach 1,127 kg/ha, the highest since 2022; state-run large plantations are projected to produce 1,285 kg/ha, much higher than in 2023-2024; private large plantations have the highest productivity at 1,381 kg/ha. of the 3.31 million hectares of coconut plantations in 2023, about 2.54 million hectares were fruitful, 410,780 hectares unfruitful, and 375,030 ha damaged or unfruitful. The main growing provinces are located in 38 provinces, with Riau province being the largest with 440,000 hectares and production of 411,000 tons.2023 Indonesia's domestic coconut price rose slightly to 6,375 rupiah per kilogram in December, compared to 6,336 rupiah per kilogram in November.The international coconut price was US$1,109 per metric ton in December 2023, down from US$1,115 per metric ton in November.2023 Indonesia's domestic price for coconut rose slightly to 6,375 rupiah per kilogram in December compared to 6,336 rupiah per kilogram in November.

In 2023, Indonesia exported a cumulative total of 2.17 million tons of coconut valued at $1.31 million (about Rp 21.52 billion). Exports involved 15 HS codes, of which HS 15131990 (semi-manufactured coconut oil) had the largest export volume, valued at US$392.26, accounting for 29.841 TP3T. Among the major export markets, China accounted for 17.421 TP3T, valued at about US$228,947 (about Rp 3.74 billion); Malaysia accounted for 15.961 TP3T, valued at 209,812 US dollars; the Netherlands accounted for 11.151 TP3T, valued at 146,561 US dollars; the United States accounted for 8.471 TP3T, valued at 111,300 US dollars; Sri Lanka accounted for 6.411 TP3T, valued at 84,248 US dollars; South Korea accounted for 4.011 TP3T, valued at 52,725 US dollars; and Thailand accounted for 1.751 TP3T, valued at 22,946 US dollars. Chinese investment in Indonesia's coconut industry amounted to US$100 million (about Rp 1.67 trillion) for the construction of coconut processing plants or treatment facilities, and the willingness to invest continues to be high. The Minister of Investment and Downstream Industries mentioned that Chinese investment in Indonesia is active, not only in minerals, but also in coconut and other fields, and has recently begun to start construction of related projects.
