Chinese-funded industrial parks spur development of neighboring micro and small businesses

North Maluku has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years, with the province's economy growing by 32.09% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2025, making it the fastest-growing province in Indonesia, according to data from the central bank of Indonesia, a growth that has not only been reflected in the large-scale industries, but has also benefited the grassroots.In Central Hamahela, small and micro-enterprises have flourished around the industrial park, where thousands of workers and large-scale production activities have created new economic opportunities, and a number of small businesses are making significant daily revenues.

For example, the owner of a food stall has a daily income of up to 10 million rupiah from his stall and employs eight employees working in two shifts. Another employee works in a restaurant that also has a sizable daily revenue. The General Manager of External Relations of Veddah Industrial Park (IWIP) said that by the end of 2024, the company has cooperated with 323 local suppliers to promote the growth of the local economy from employment, supply chain, and local businesses, generatingmultiplier effect, reinforcing the economic cycle of Central Hamahela and the surrounding area.

In addition, IWIP and Vedavan Nickel have carried out a number of social development projects to support the economic independence of the population. For example, a freshwater fish farming project in the village of Kulojaya, which operates 31 fishponds and empowers 30 local farmers, not only creates jobs, but also generates opportunities for self-development in the food industry. He emphasized that industrial development should go hand in hand with the enhancement of people's well-being, and that the project focuses on developing the long-term economic capacity and potential of the community.
